Why grafting may be discussed

Bone can reduce after extraction, infection or long-term tooth loss. Grafting aims to create or preserve a foundation for an implant. It does not guarantee that an implant will integrate, and the type of graft depends on the defect.

Common approaches

Socket preservation is performed around the time of extraction. Guided bone regeneration may add width around an implant site. Larger ridge defects can need block grafting, while upper posterior sites may need sinus augmentation. Materials may be sourced from the patient, a processed donor, animal-derived material or synthetic products; ask exactly what is proposed.

Healing and staging

Some grafts are performed with implants and others require a separate healing stage. Travel plans should allow clinical review before departure. Do not assume that a package timetable applies to every grafted case.

Reducing avoidable risk

Follow cleaning and medication instructions, avoid smoking and protect the area from pressure. Report increasing swelling, discharge, fever, exposed material or persistent pain. Keep written product and treatment records.
